Pain is a trouble that everyone may experience. It not only brings discomfort to the body, but also affects mood and quality of life. Whether it's a sudden injury or long-term, chronic pain, it can make it impossible to work, rest, and enjoy life. Natural pain relief solutions are a consumer trend.
Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a powerful natural analgesic ingredient first discovered in the 1950s, and it has been used as a food supplement in Europe for many years. As an endogenous fatty acid amide, PEA is naturally produced when the human body is injured and stressed. It is also found in animal offal, egg yolk, olive oil, safflower and soy lecithin, peanuts and other foods. Research has found that PEA is part of the endocannabinoid system, interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), and has been studied to exert similar benefits to cannabidiol (CBD). The ECS is an important system involved in balancing many body functions such as pain, mood, sleep, stress, and immune regulation, among others. Unlike CBD, PEA has a long history of safe use and has been recognized by regulations in many countries around the world.
regulations
Products containing PEA are approved as nutraceuticals, food supplements or foods for medical purposes in different countries.
PEA is labeled as a dietary supplement ingredient in the United States. The US FDA has a flexible policy on dietary ingredients. Federal law does not require dietary supplements to be proven safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before being marketed. PEA is considered safe as long as the ingredient can be found in human metabolism. PEA is not used to treat or prevent disease, and there is no GRAS notification at this time. However, it is still safe to use PEA supplements.
In some European countries, such as Italy, Germany and Spain, PEA was commercially promoted as a dietary food for special medical purposes (AFMS) in its early stages. In 2017, Italy included PEA in the list of food supplement substances, and PEA was reclassified as a food supplement. Normast® is Epitech's first finished product introduced to the European market, where it is currently sold under several brands (OptiPEA®, Levagen® and Levagen™+).
Since then, PEA has been approved by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Canadian Natural Health Products Directorate (NDPD). Gencor's PEA was approved by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in 2020 to be added to the Australian Register of Therapeutic Substances and can claim health benefits in joint care and reducing body pain. In the same year, it was approved as a new food by the Brazilian Health Supervision Agency (ANVISA).
safety
PEA is naturally present in the human body and can also be found in many food sources. It is safe to supplement into the body. And a large number of preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) have proven that PEA does not produce adverse reactions and is a very safe ingredient.
In Italy, where the Italian Ministry of Health has revised its two food supplement guidelines on permissible daily levels of vitamins, minerals, nutrients and other substances with nutritional or physiological effects, PEA has been shown to have no adverse effects, even with long-term use and/ or administered to vulnerable subjects. PEA was therefore added to the list of substances used in food supplements without a clear maximum limit.
